How do I facilitate final exam viewing in Quercus?

Updated on

Have you received final exam viewing requests from your students (communicated via the Office of the Registrar)?  This guide is designed to help you provide students access to any final exams (including comments and feedback) that were written using Quercus Quizzes or Assignments.

Although this guide provides information on how to release grades either to individual students or to the entire class, please consider opting for the latter if you can. It's typically easier to do and students appreciate it.

1. Final exam viewing for Quercus Quizzes

1.1. Allow all students to view quiz grades and feedback

If you opt to allow all your student to view their quiz results, including their responses and your feedback, you may also need to extend the dates of the course to allow students access to their quiz responses.

1.1.1. Extend the dates of the course to allow students to see their quiz responses

One month after the end of the term, your course will enter a read-only state for students (also for TAs and Course Designers). Once a course is in read-only state, you will no longer be able to change the quiz settings required to show students their quiz responses.  To change the quiz setting and allows students to see their quiz responses once the course is in read-only state, you will need to extend the course end dates.

To extend the course end dates, follow the instructions on our guide: How do I set non-default start and end dates on a course? or contact us at [email protected] for assistance.

1.1.2. Select the quiz you want whose settings you want to edit

  1. Select Quizzes in your Course Navigation menu.
  2. Select the Quiz you want to edit.
  3. Select Edit.

1.1.3. Edit the quiz settings to allow students to view their responses

Quercus Quiz Settings Let Students See Their Responses and Correct Answers
  1. In the Quiz details, select the option Let Students See Their Quiz Responses.
  2. Optionally, also select the option Let Students See The Correct Answers.

Only After Their Last Attempt options: If your quiz allowed multiple attempts it's best to leave unchecked the Only After Their Last Attempt option for students to view their responses or the correct answers. Last Attempt is defined by Canvas as the last allowed attempt, not as the last attempt made by the student. Therefore, if you allowed 2 attempts for the quiz and some students only completed 1 attempt, those students will not see their responses or the correct answers.

1.1.4. Post the grades for the Quiz in the Gradebook

  1. Select Grades from the course navigation menu.
  2. In the Gradebook, hover over the Quiz column header and select the Options icon (3 vertical dots).
  3. Select Post Grades.

1.2. Allow only specific students to view quiz grades and feedback

There is currently no way to post Gradebook items only to a specific student. It's also not possible to download the student's quiz responses from SpeedGrader as a PDF file. However you can use the Student Analysis Report that is available for all quizzes and surveys. You can find information on this report and other quiz statistics on the following Canvas Guide: Once I publish a quiz, what kinds of quiz statistics are available?

The Student Analysis Report is a downloadable csv file that includes includes all the quiz questions and each student's responses to the questions. For a complete list of the columns visible in the Student Analysis Report, please see the information on the following guide from CTSI (Centre for Teaching Support and Innovation): Multiple Choice Quercus Quiz Analysis Reports.

You can share the Student Analysis Report results with individual students using the steps below:

1.2.1. Select the Quiz you want to share

  1. Open the report and Save a Copy that you will use to keep only the information for the student who requested the viewing.
  2. The Student Analysis Report does not include any comments or feedback you may have added to quiz in SpeedGrader. If you want to share those with your student, copy and paste them into the information you share with your student (e.g., in a separate column added to the spreadsheet after each question column).

1.2.4. Share the report with the student

  1. Format the report information as desired, and
  2. Share the report information with the student.

2. Final exam viewing for Quercus Assignments

2.1. Allow all students to view assignment grades and feedback

If you opt to allow all your student to view their exam results for a Quercus assignment (including their submission and your feedback) all you need to to is post the grades for the assignment in the Gradebook. You can follow the same steps shown in the Post the grades for the Quiz in the Gradebook section above.

2.2. Allow only specific students to view assignment grades and feedback

There is currently no way to post Gradebook items only to a specific student. However, for assignments, you can download an individual student's annotated submission as a PDF file and share that with the student. You can also download any general assignment comments you made in SpeedGrader as a separate file.

Before you start:

  1. Navigate to SpeedGrader from the Assignment or from the Gradebook.
  2. Select the Assignment submission for the desired student.

2.2.1. Download an annotated PDF of the student's submission

  1. Select the Download annotated pdf icon.

2.2.2. Download general assignment comments

  1. Select Download Submission Comments (comments will download as a pdf file).

2.2.3. Share files with student

  1. Share the downloaded files, as well as grades information with the student.

Sharing files using OneDrive: If you share the files you sent to students using your OneDrive, you can choose different sharing options. For sharing options on OneDrive, please see the following guide from UofT Libraries: Share a document, folder or file on OneDrive.
