External tools can be added to Quercus either in the assignment creation process or through the Navigation tab in settings. Please keep in mind that not all external tools are integrated into Quercus (eg. Crowdmark) and you will have to request for access to these tools. Please also check the Edtech Catalogue for a list of supported tools that are available for use.
1. External tools available in Assignments
Start the assignment creation process by clicking on the "+Assignment" button on the Assignment page.
- In the "Submission Type" drop down, please select the “External Tool” option.
- Click on the “Find” button” and the Configure External Tool pop-up window will appear.
- Browse the list of supported external tools available and select one of your choice. Click on the "Select" button to confirm your selection.
2. External tools from the Navigation tab in Settings
Some external non-assignment-based tools can be found in the Navigation tab in settings. You can enable them by following the instructions below:
- Click on "Settings" from the Quercus side menu.
- Click on the "Navigation" tab.
- You will see a list of non-activated external tools here.
- Once you have found the tool you want to use, click on the 3 dots for more options.
- Click "Enable".
- Click Save to save the changes.
Now the external tool should be visible on the Quercus side menu in your course.
Did you hit "save"? Often, the save button requires scrolling to see - and it is very easy to miss. If you've done the "drag n'drop" but are not seeing the tools in your course, double check that you saved your changes.
3. Cannot find the tool I am looking for
There might be some external tools that you wish to use and are not accessible from the above methods. Some tools such as Crowdmark, require you to request for access. The Crowdmark integration guide will walk you through how to integrate Crowdmark into your course. Please see the Edtech Catalogue for a list of supported tools that you can use. Like Crowdmark, you might need to file a request to access some of the tools in the catalogue.
Keep in mind that some external tools (eg. Zoom) are not supported by Quercus and are also not supported by UofT. We do not recommend using tools that have not undergone U of T's security and risk management evaluation process. If you are considering using Zoom as a webinar/meeting tool, please consider using other available tools supported by UofT. Please see which webinar tool should I use and Tools Beyond Quercus for more information.
