How do I add captions to a MyMedia video?

Updated on

MyMedia is a University of Toronto Libraries service for hosting, managing, and streaming audio and video. You can use MyMedia to share videos through permanent links or embed them in Quercus and other supported locations.

MyMedia does not automatically generate captions. To add captions to a video, you need to create and review a caption file using another tool, such as Microsoft Clipchamp, and then upload the caption file to MyMedia.

This guide explains how to upload a WebVTT (.vtt) caption file to an existing MyMedia video.

Accessibility: Captions make video content accessible to people who are Deaf or hard of hearing and can benefit others who need or prefer to read the audio content. Under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), applicable public-facing web content must meet accessibility requirements that include captions for prerecorded video with audio. Refer to AODA Web Accessibility Guidelines for Videos for details.

Before you begin

Make sure you have:

  1. uploaded your video to MyMedia and
  2. created and reviewed a WebVTT (.vtt) caption file for your video.

If you don't already have a caption file, refer to our guide: How do I generate captions and caption files using Microsoft Clipchamp?

Important: Automatically generated captions may contain errors. Always review and correct your captions for accuracy before adding them to your video.

Jump to

1. Open your video in MyMedia

After logging into MyMedia, navigate to the video you want to add captions to.

  1. Select the Edit icon next to the video.

2. Upload the caption file

The caption file is added to your video as a text track.

  1. Open the Text Tracks tab.
  2. Select + Create New.
  3. Select Captions from the drop-down menu.
  4. Select Upload a file to locate and upload your .vtt caption file.
  5. Select Create.

3. Check the captions

After uploading the caption file, play the video with captions turned on.

Check that:

  • the captions appear throughout the video,
  • the captions are synchronized with the audio, and
  • the caption text accurately represents the spoken content and other relevant audio.

If you identify errors, correct the caption file and upload the revised version.

When uploading captions files to MyMedia you may occasionally get errors for 'incorrect escapes'. These are typically due to special characters in the file (like '&' or '%' ) – removing those characters and re-uploading the file typically removes the errors.
