Make key course format structural decisions
Updated onArticleContextual factors for your specific course will impact your design decisions, such as:
- level of the course (e.g. first-year, advanced, graduate?)
- nature of the subject (e.g. are there specific requirements for this course within the program?)
- learner characteristics (e.g. how many students in the class?)
In the design process, focus on the most important learning outcomes for your students, and be prepared to adapt classroom activities to new types of activities that are appropriate to the online environment. Creating a simple course migration plan before you begin to move your course online will speed up the development process in Quercus.

How can I share a recording?
Updated onArticleAfter you've recorded some content, you'll want to share that to your course (or perhaps to the EdTech Team, if you're participating in the remote editing process). You'll want to share your content by uploading it to an institutionally-supported video streaming service like Microsoft Stream or MyMedia.
You can review the hosting options via our guide "Where should I host my large video files?"

What accessibility accommodations are available in quizzes?
Updated onArticleAccommodations in Quercus Quizzes are often related to one or more of the following parameters:
- students may require additional time and/or additional attempts to complete the quiz
- students need to access the quiz on a different date and/or time than what is assigned to everyone else
Quercus Quizzes offer two built-in features, Assign to and Moderate, that allow you to implement these accommodations. This guide outlines the options offered by these two features and how to use them to implement accommodations.

How do I use the formula quiz question?
Updated onArticleFormula is a type of question available in Quizzes and New Quizzes that allows professors to create simple mathematical assessments. It is recommended that New Quizzes be used instead of Quizzes when writing a Formula question, due to the former being more intuitive than the latter. It should be noted that the Formula feature does not support higher math such as calculus or optimization.

How do I set a quiz due dates/availability for course sections or specific students?
Updated onArticleBy default, you'll be prompted to set availability for any quiz for your course. These instructions detail how to add a second (and a third and a fourth, etc.) release for students and/or sections that might require an availability accommodation. This is often done in conjunction with a time accommodation, wherein the length of time to actually take the assessment is also modified.
With these settings, keep in mind:
- You can assign the quiz to everyone in your course, to course sections, or to individual students.
- You cannot assign a quiz to groups within your course unless you convert these groups first to sections using the U of T Advanced Group tool (see How to Access the Advanced Groups Tool).
- Ssing the settings on this page, you cannot assign the length of quiz writing time to a single student. If you would like to extend the "writing" time for a quiz for one individual student, use the Quiz Moderation page (see UTSC's "Adding extra time to quiz attempts").

How do I import a course template?
Updated onArticleTo make course building easier from term to term, year to year, you can use an existing public course template or you can export one of your previous courses and import it (as an IMSCC file) into a different course shell. Before importing a course template, you should have a course template file ready to import. If you would like to download a course template (see How do I download a course template?).
Before you import a course, there are a few things that you should know:
- If you plan to reuse content from a previous course, import the template first before importing content from the old course.
- Importing the same course export package more than once will overwrite any existing content in the course. To avoid this, re-download the export file to create a new course export file before re-importing the file into your course. When you import the new file, your course will include both the content initially imported and content from the re-downloaded export file.
- If you are importing a public course template, your course will inherit some settings from the imported course template, including course visibility and content license settings. Be sure to review and change these settings accordingly, as detailed below in Review your course Visibility and Content License settings.

How do I facilitate final exam viewing in Quercus?
Updated onArticleHave you received final exam viewing requests from your students (communicated via the Office of the Registrar)? This guide is designed to help you provide students access to any final exams (including comments and feedback) that were written using Quercus Quizzes or Assignments.
Although this guide provides information on how to release grades either to individual students or to the entire class, please consider opting for the latter if you can. It's typically easier to do and students appreciate it.
