What is Backchanneling?
Updated onArticle"While the concept of backchannel communication began with body language and uttered affirmations and dissents, it has since come to encompass technological communication, as well. This is particularly relevant in large lectures where traditional backchannel communication is difficult to elicit and receive due to the number of students. Mindful integration of backchannel opportunities in the classroom creates options for students who would otherwise avoid interacting during group discussions. It also offers additional avenues for students who struggle to interact during class due to disabilities or other concerns. Finally, it allows students to more actively participate in the lecture, so that information and communication can flow in multiple directions." (Neustifter, Ruth; Kukkonen, Tuuli; Coulter, Claire; Landry,Samantha. Canadian Journal of Learning & Technology, Spring 2016, Vol. 42 Issue 1, p1-22)

What is the difference between Canvas and Quercus?
Updated onArticleSurprise! They are the same thing - Canvas (made by a company called Instructure) is the commercial name of the learning management system and Quercus is how it has been branded at the University of Toronto. You'll hear the system referred to interchangeably, but we do try to use Quercus (or "the Q"). Other institutions use Canvas by Instructure, but no other school will call it Quercus. If you're doing a search of community forums, for example, you'll want to use Canvas as your search term, not Quercus.

What Canvas elements can be added to Modules?
Updated onArticleAfter you've created a module, you can add items to it. There are restrictions to the types of items. To add items, select on the + button to the right of the Module Title. (If you have a tutorial sidebar, you might have to close this to see all your available options). Select on the down arrow to drop down the options. The options are: Assignment, Quiz, File, Content Page, Discussion, Text Header, External URL, and External Tool. After selecting the item, and naming it if it is a new item, make sure to finish the process by selecting on "add item." TIP: If you are adding an assignment, quiz, file, or discussion, create that element first, and then come here an link it. A module is designed to structure existing course elements, it's not necessarily the place to create them.
