This guide provides a comparison of the two Crowdmark assessment types that will help you identify which one works best for your course and assessments. Selecting the assessment type that suits better for a particular assessment will depend on whether you would like to administer and collect the assessments in person or for the student to complete and submit their work digitally and independently.
In Crowdmark, you can create two types of assessments:
- Administered: In-class (paper-based) assessments
- Assigned: Digitally submitted (online/remote) assessments

1. Overview of Crowdmark Assessment Types
1.1. Administered Assessment
Administered assessments are written in person while students are invigilated by the instructor and/or TA. Assessment templates are uploaded to Crowdmark and configured for printing. They are distributed to students in-person, collected, then scanned and uploaded to Crowdmark for grading.
- Ideal for: High stakes assessments that require rigorous academic integrity security (e.g., final exam, mid-term exam, assessments for accreditation purposes)
1.2. Assigned Assessment
Assigned assessments are written and collected entirely online. Assessments are created directly in Crowdmark and emailed to the students. Students complete the questions independently and submit their work for online grading.
- Ideal for: Lower stakes or formative assessments that do not require rigorous academic integrity security and/or are (e.g., homework assignments, practice tests)
2. Decision Flowchart: Administered vs Assigned Assessment
Choosing a Crowdmark assessment type may depend on several factors including but not limited to whether you wish to administer and collect the assessment in person or online, the time you have to prepare the assessment, whether you have access to printer and scanner, the type of assessment (high or low stakes), or the degree of academic integrity security required.
The flowchart below will help you make a decision about the type of Crowdmark assessment that will work best for your particular case.
