How do I record selected sessions (e.g. lectures) using OpenCast?

Updated on

This guide details how to record only a subsection of your course using OpenCast. While many use OpenCast's automatic capturing application to record an entire term's worth of sessions, you can also use it to selectively record session. This could be handy if you have a review session or if you are informed that students are unable to attend your class in person.

What is OpenCast? Learn more about Learning Space Management's automatic content capturing tool via the LSM Website > OpenCast Content Capture System.

Before you begin

  1. Confirm that you are teaching in a classroom with OpenCast using LSM's Instructor Portal (Note: Not all classrooms are OpenCast-enabled)
  2. Ensure OpenCast is enabled in your Quercus course

1. Login to the LSM Portal to configure your OpenCast Setting

To make changes to your OpenCast settings (per course), you can login to the LSM Portal. Before you do this, you will need to ensure that OpenCast has been enabled for your course; you do this through Quercus (see how do I enable OpenCast in my Quercus course?). You need to enable each course but only one time for the term.

2. Pause (or resume) your recordings

2.1. Use the Instructor Course view to see your enabled courses

2.2. Select the course you'd like to edit

For each course, you'll be able to select different settings.

  1. Confirm the currently selected setting for recording (either paused or active).
  2. Use the pencil icon to open the settings menu for editing.

2.3. Select "Pause or Active" as the recording setting

After selecting the Setting menu (via the pencil icon), you'll be able to select the recording and publishing status.

  1. If you are planning to use OpenCast sporadically, we recommend that you select the "Pause" radio button. If Pause is selected, OpenCast will not record your scheduled sessions.
  2. We also recommend that you set the "Publish" status to "Manual." This allows for you to review, edit and confirm the footage before it is shared to the class.
  3. When you've made your selection, select the "submit" button to save your changes.

3. Confirm your selections

Use the table view to confirm that your preferences have been selected.

Recording options: Recording Deactivated (will not record) or Recording Activated (will record)
