Review FASE EdTech Kits (for self-capturing and filming)

Updated on

The guide provides an overview of three kits (silver, gold, platinum) that you can purchase for self-recording and self-filming (from wherever you happen to be). These kits include elements that compatibly work together (note that you still have to purchase a few adapters). They are especially useful for those who do not already have equipment; if you do, you might want to re-use what you have before purchasing brand new stuff. Each kit contains a webcam, microphone, lighting and data storage options. As you get to the higher price points, the hardware selected both improves in quality as well as expands in amount of tools used in the kit.

You can extend these kits to include options for ad hoc mixed modality delivery (e.g. dual or hybrid deliver) but that type of set up will require extra hardware.

Before you begin

Below are our kits - they are packages of equipment that we recommend but they aren't your only option!

Before making any purchases, consider reviewing our full guides on:

  1. Data storage - Recording takes up a lot of space! Make sure you're saving your content safely and redundantly. For more options, see our data storage options in the filming accessories guide.
  2. Webcam/Camera - Each kit includes a webcam or camera (or both!); you will likely want to invest in an external camera to provide more flexibility in positioning. And you'll use it on webinars, too! For more camera options, see our low, mid, and high level cameras in our guide to selecting a camera.
  3. Lighting - A good camera only goes so far! Inexpensively you can improve your video feed with a ring light or more advanced lighting. For more options, see our lighting options in the filming accessories guide.
  4. Microphones - Choosing between a wired and wireless camera is not only a difference in price but a difference in function. For more options, see our guide to selecting a microphone.
  5. Tablets - Another choice - display tablet or stand alone tablet? We have you covered in our guide to selecting a tablet.

  1. Bronze Kit (Great for a Starter kit)
  2. Silver Kit (Great for high quality screen recording/stationary self-filming)
  3. Gold Kit (Great for the at home filming buff)

1. Bronze Kit ($348.97)

The bonze kit is the starter kit - it has good but simple components to help enable you to create great screen recordings. If you're just testing the waters of self-capture and know that you'll be mostly in a quiet, space using your computer, this is the kit for you!

2. Silver Kit ($615.94)

The major upgrade from bronze to silver is in the microphone (and its accessories). Instead of a plug n'play USB microphone, we're into the territory of a wireless microphone for recording. Even if you're planning to be stationary, a wireless microphone allows for more consistent audio because it moves with you (clipped to you). This kit is designed to enable excellent screen capture recordings, with a little on video thrown in via webcam. The microphone included in this kit is also the one recommended by LSM (see LSM's guide to connecting your own microphone); you'd be able to bring this microphone to LSM classrooms and use it for your teaching.

3. Gold Kit ($3,383.11)

We're making a jump here to premium self-produced content. We're introducing a video camera as the big ticket item as well as a display tablet (likely for handwriting, drawing, or annotation). This kit is designed to enable you to do anything you can dream of - be on camera, film a demonstration, create dynamic on screen content, whatever you can imagine from wherever you happen to be. You'll also see a back up audio recorder (Zoom H4N) which is a key redundancy when filming high stakes content (e.g. things that would be hard to refilm).
