Screen/Audio Capture in Windows 10 (Prof. Bradley Saville)

Updated on

We wish we'd thought of it, but we didn't! This technique was documented by Prof. Saville and used while recording content for his Chemical Engineering courses. It's a great alternate to SnagIt and provides much the same functionality.

How to screen and audio capture in Windows 10

Direct screen/audio capture in Windows can be very helpful if you want to do a demonstration that involves use of software, such as Excel, or Aspen Plus. With a couple of easy steps, you can set up Windows 10 to do this.

There are a few settings that must be enabled to get the appropriate video quality, and in most cases, the microphone is disabled for security reasons, so that may need to be enabled.

1. Set-up procedure

1.1. Open Windows / Settings

  1. Go to your start menu and search for settings.

1.2. Select "Gaming"

1.3. Choose the "Captures" menu (at left)

  1. Select on the "Captures" vertical tab.
  2. Select the check box "turn mic on by default when I record"

1.4. Specify your video recording settings.

These settings will help you capture the video at the highest resolution that you can with this tool.

  1. Scroll down and set the video quality to "high" (default = "standard")
  2. Select the radio button "60 fps" to increase the video frame rate recording.
  3. Optional: Make sure that "Capture Mouse Cursor in Recordings" is enabled (select this if you'd like to see your cursor in the final video)

1.5. Close the settings window.

2. To run screen capture:

2.1. Open Xbox Game Bar

  1. Go to Windows start menu and type "xbox game bar."
  2. Select on the App "Xbox Game Bar."

Alternatively, simultaneously press the windows key on the keyboard and "G." This opens the game bar menu.

3. Confirm settings before you record

Click anywhere else on the screen to hide the game bar. You can now commence narration, clicking on cells, activating menus within programs, etc.

To stop recording, click on the stop button on the upper right.

3.1. At the top, check that the microphone icon is enabled. If not, click on it.

If there is a line through the icon, then that element is disabled. Select on it to toggle the setting.

3.2. Click on the round white button to begin recording

3.3. Click anywhere else on the screen to hide the game bar.

You can now commence narration, clicking on cells, activating menus within programs, etc.

3.4. To stop recording, click on the stop button on the upper right.

During recording, a smaller set of features will float on top of your display. This will not be included in your recording.

4. Edit your recording

Files will generally be stored in the user's personal documents folder, under "Videos", and "Captures". You can now edit as/if needed (see which video hosting service should you use?). We recommend uploading your videos to Microsoft Stream and enabling the auto-captions.

Download the XBox Game Bar

If for some reason you can't find the XBox Game Bar app, you can download it for free from the Microsoft Play Store.
